titleOfInvention Improved polymerization process
abstract <PICT:0599378/IV/1> In the low-temperature polymerization of olefines, or mixtures thereof, in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst to form plastic or rubbery products and in which the reaction mixture is mechanically agitated, turbulence is induced immediately adjacent the shaft of the agitator by flowing along the shaft a stream of liquid normally added to the polymerization mixture (see Group II). Preferably, all or part of the diluent, e.g. alkyl halide, carbon disulphide, is fed into the reaction vessel along the agitator shaft. In the stuffing-box 18 of the agitator shaft 16, channel 23 is provided for the introduction of liquid along the shaft. The process is particularly suited to the copolymerization of tertiary mono-olefines, e.g. isobutylene with diolefines.
