titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the production of polymeric materials
abstract One or more compounds have the group <FORM:0598777/IV/1> where R is hydrogen, an alkyl, carboxylic acid or ester group, are polymerized in aqueous media in the presence of a peroxy catalyst, an emulsifier, a water soluble copper salt or salts, copper sulphate being specified, constituting 0.1 to 2.0 parts per million of the aqueous phase, the oxygen partial pressure in the system being 0.02 to 0.1 atmosphere. Peroxy compounds specified are hydrogen, benzoyl or succinyl peroxides, potassium or ammonium persulphates or percarbonates. Emulsifiers specified are alkali metal and ammonium salts of sulphonated oleic, lauric or palmitic acid or of sulphonated methyl oleate, sodium and ammonium palmitates, stearates, and oleates, agar agar, gelatine, gum tragacanth and soluble starch. Plasticizers and, as an anti-frothing agent, ethyl palmitate, may be present. Monomers specified are vinyl acetate, propionate and chloride, acrylates, alphachloracrylates and methacrylates. Polyvinyl chloride so prepared gives little hydrogen chloride when heated to 160 DEG C. for 1 hour. Specification 589,264 is referred to. The Provisional Specification is not restricted to copper salts but refers to salts of heavy metals of variable valency.
