titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to process for the production of pantothenic acid |
abstract | Pantothenic acid is obtained by subjecting fermentable molasses or malted starch mash, e.g. malted maize starch, to the action of an active culture of Aerobacter aerogenes whilst maintaining the mash in a state of constant aeration preferably at temperatures between 25 DEG and 37 DEG C. The pH of the mash is adjusted to a value between 5.6 to 8.0 prior to inoculation with the active culture of bacteria. Nitrogenous and mineral materials, e.g. potassium acid phosphate and urea, may be incorporated in the mash. Aeration rates of from about 20 to 130 cubic feet per hour per square foot of mash surface can be utilized and may be effected by shaking stirring or spraying the mash in an atmosphere of sterile air. Details are given of each of these methods of aeration.ALSO:Active strains of Aerobacter aerogenes to be used in fermenting molasses or malted starch mash are obtained by placing soil in sterile flasks containing sterile water, adding malted corn mashes in the presence of potassium dihydrogen phosphate, potassium hydrogen phosphate and urea as nutrients. |
