titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to polymerisation products of ethylene |
abstract | The solubility of substantially saturated and soluble polymers and interpolymers of ethylene is decreased by mixing and heating above 40 DEG C. with organic peroxides, compounds containing a N-Cl grouping, metal alkyls, amine oxides, or hydrazine salts or their derivatives, all of which are capable of generating free radicals when heated. Preferably between 0.5 and 2.0 per cent of the compound is used and the heating is carried out between 70 DEG and 250 DEG C. Mixing may be carried out directly on rolls with or without the use of small amounts of a solvent, e.g. benzene, as temporary plasticiser or the ingredients may be dissolved or dispersed in a suitable liquid and cast or extruded as a film, fibre or tube. Fillers, pigments or plasticisers may also be added to the composition. Heating may be done in an oven or under pressure in a mould. Specified interpolymers of ethylene are those with carbon monoxide, acrylic and alkacrylic acids, their esters and nitriles, vinyl acetate, propionate and chloride, vinylidene chloride and maleic and fumaric acids and derivatives thereof. Compounds capable of generating free radicals specified include benzyl and lauroyl peroxides, chloramine-T and B, dichloramine-T, lead tetraethyl, lead diethyl dibromide, triethylamine oxide, hydrazine hydrate, hydrochloride and sebacate and dibenzoyl hydrazine. |
