titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to insecticidal compositions
abstract An insecticidal composition comprises dichloro-diphenyl-trichlorethane (D.D.T.) and a substance which has the property of attracting pests thereto. The attractant may be a substance or a mixture having either a strong attraction for a particular pest, e.g. (a) geraniol or geraniol and eugenol for attracting Japanese beetles; (b) methyl esters of benzoic, acetic, malonic, propionic and oxalic acids and ethyl esters of malonic, propionic and oxalic acids for attracting codling moths; (c) fish meal for attracting clothes moths and carpet beetles and (d) formaldehyde for attracting house flies, or a general attraction for a number of different pests, e.g. sugars, molasses, syrup, honey and beer. The attractant may itself be hygroscopic or a hygroscopic agent, e.g. glycerin, glycols and gums, such as Acacia, Bassora, Ghatti, Senegal and Tragacanth, may be incorporated in the composition. The D.D.T. and attractant mixture may be diluted with an inert carrier or vehicle, e.g. an oil-bound water paint, paperhanger's paste or finely-divided clay with or without suspending agents, and preferably also with a wetting agent such as a soap, a sulphated alcohol or an alkali salt of an alkyl naphthalene sulphonate.
