titleOfInvention Improvements in cellulose derivative materials
abstract The deleterious action of ultra-violet light upon cellulose esters or ethers particularly in the form of filaments, fibres, foils and films is reduced by incorporating not more than 15 per cent, based on the weight of the ester or ether, of an ester of an aromatic hydroxy carboxylic acid with a phenol, an alcohol containing an aromatic nucleus, or a cycloaliphatic alcohol, said ester containing in its molecule the residues of two or more molecules of aromatic hydroxy carboxylic acid. The ester may be incorporated in the cellulose derivative composition, or in the formed filaments, films &c. by impregnating them with a solution of the said ester in a volatile liquid which is a softening agent for the cellulose derivative, and then removing the volatile liquid by evaporation. Suitable esters are salicoyl-salicylic acid phenyl ester, resorcinol disalicylate, hydroquinone disalicylate, b -naphthohydroquinone disalicylate, resorcinol di-p-cresotinate, and hydroquinone di-p-cresotinate. Plasticizers may be present. In an example a film of from 0.001 to 0.003 inch in thickness is prepared from a dope consisting of resorcinol disalicylate, 0.759, cellulose acetate 15.0 g. diacetone alcohol 10.0 ccs. and acetone 90 ccs. The film so produced loses very little tensile strength when exposed to ultra violet light under conditions which reduce by 90 per cent the tensile strength of a film prepared in a similar manner without the resorcinol disalicylate. There is also no discoloration, and no brittleness on bending.
