abstract | Mono-olefinic unsaturated compounds are polymerized by heating in the presence of an oxime excluding acrolein-oxime. Unsaturated compounds specified are ethylene, propylene, butylenes, tetrafluoroethylene, vinyl and vinylidene fluorides and chlorides, vinyl acetate, propionate, benzoate, isobutyrate, thiolacetate, dimethyl acetate, tri-methyl acetate, laurate and hexenoate, methyl vinyl ketone, ethyl isopropenyl ketone, styrene, acrylic and methacrylic acids and nitriles, amides and anhydrides thereof, N-vinyl phthalimide and N-vinylsuccinimide. Oximes specified are benzilmono- and di-oximes, alpha- and beta-benzaldoximes, phloroglucinol trioxime, methyl isopropyl ketoxime, dibenzilketoxime and oximes of para-methoxyacetophenone, alpha-hydrindone, benzophenone, methyl naphthyl ketone, para - benzoquinone, desoxybenzoin, pinacolone, mesityl oxide, cyclopentanone, cyclohexanone, acetophenone, 1-methone, isophorone, carbacryl methyl ketone, methyl n-nonyl ketone, a -carvone, lauraldehyde and methyl ethyl ketone, para-homo salicylaldoxime, beta-naphthaldoxime, vanillin oxime, 2-4-dihydroxybenzaldoxime, trimethyl acetaldoxime, valeraldoxime, n-caproaldoxime, beta-ethyl-beta-methyl acroleinoxime, hexahydrobenzaldoxime, n-caprylaldoxime, pelargonaldoxime, 5 - methyl furaldoxime, phenylacetaldoxime, meta - tolualdoxime, hydrocinnamaldoxime, benzyl methyl ketoxime, methyl n-undecyl ketoxime, acetoxime, formaldoxime, glyoxime, methyl ethyl glyoxime, butane dioxime 2,3-carboxylic acid, beta-(alpha-furyl) acroleinoxime, pentadecyl aldoxime, tridecyl aldoxime, palmitaldoxime, margaraldoxime, piperonaldoxime, stearaldoxime and veratraldoxime. The process may be carried out under pressure, with agitation, in absence of or in low concentrations of molecular oxygen or with an inert liquid present, those specified being benzene, iso-octane, toluene, t-butyl alcohol, ethers and water alone or admixed with any of the above organic liquids. Polymerization may be performed by batch or continuously. The products, particularly polyethylene, may be extruded into fibres or tubes, cast into films or used for coating paper, leather or fabric. A spongy form of polyethylene, soluble in xylene (see examples 5 and 6) may be used for padding, and heat and sound insulation. Specification 578,598 is referred to. |
