titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to the catalytic alkylation of paraffins and olefins |
abstract | Aluminium chloride, isobutane, ethylene and hydrogen chloride or ethyl chloride are contacted at elevated temperature and pressure until all the metal halide is converted to a liquid hydrocarbon complex which is used as the catalyst in the productive phase of the process comprising feeding isobutane and ethylene, in a molar ratio of at least 2 : 1, with ethyl or hydrogen chloride to a reaction zone at 90-175 DEG F. and 100-1000 p.s.i., a product containing 2,3-dimethyl butane being recovered. Ethyl chloride equivalent to 2-6 per cent by volume of the isobutane is the preferred promoter. The activity of the catalyst may be periodically renewed by withdrawing part of the spent catalyst and adding a corresponding amount of aluminium chloride, e.g. about 1 lb. per 29 gals. of alkylate, followed by treatment with isobutane, ethylene and promoter to form the complex. In examples, the complex is formed by reaction in a turbomixer at 150 DEG or 110 DEG F., the product being separated into an upper hydrocarbon layer and a lower layer containing the complex which is used for alkylation catalyst. Results are given to show the improvement in octane number and yield after the complex has been formed as compared with the use of free metal halide. |
