titleOfInvention | Improvements in treatment of steam boiler water |
abstract | A process of treating steam boiler water to prevent deposition of insoluble silica includes the steps of maintaining in the water in the boiler a ratio of potassium to sodium in equivalents of at p least .5, and maintaining additionally a ratio of silica to the captive alkalinity associated therewith plus the free alkalinity, in equivalents of not less than .75 and not more than 2. Captive alkalinity is alkalinity which is removed with concentration of the boiler water. The potassium may be supplied in place of sodium salts used in known processes of boiler water treatment, for example, in the form of carbonate, hydroxide, sulphite, sulphate or phosphate, as potassium silicate with or without potassium chloride or potassium borate, as a boiler compound containing potassium salts with or without organic material such as dispersive tannins, lignins or alginates, or as a coagulant in the form of potassium aluminate, potassium alum or potassium bentonite. Feed water to the boiler may be treated by the base exchange process, the regeneration of the exchanger being a potassium instead of a sodium salt. In another arrangement feed water is passed through two base exchange softeners, one regenerated by acid, and the other by a potassium salt, and the effluents are mixed together. U.S.A. Specifications 1,613,656, 1,613,701 and 1,903,401 are referred to. |
