titleOfInvention Fountain pen
abstract 591,784. Fountain pens. EVERSHARP, Inc. Sept. 21, 1944, No. 18046. Convention date, Jan. 20. [Class 146 (idi)] A feed-bar for a fountain pen is provided near its forward end with overflow gutters 16 on opposite sides of the ink-feed channel 13 but separated therefrom by longitudinal walls 17, the gutters being connected by circumferential inkabsorbing slots 18 which retain ink that overflows the walls 17 from the feed channel 13. The barrel includes a forward section 2 which tapers to a pointed tip and accommodates all the inkfeed devices and all the nib 10 except the writing tip. Its inner end constitutes an extension of and is secured to the collapsable reservoir 6. The feed-bar 11 is of generally cylindrical shape and has longitudinal ink-channels 13 separated by a rib 14, the space above which forms an airchannel 15. Recesses on each upper edge of the bar provide overflow gutters 16 which are separated from the feed channels by thin walls 17. Circumferential capillary grooves 18 separated by walls 19 and extending around the bottom of the feed-bar connect the two gutters 16. Near the inner end of the bar is a second series of circumferential grooves 22 which are connected to the grooves 18 or to the inner groove 18 by a longitudinal ink-return groove 21. A radial hole 25 connects the channels 13, 15 and 22 to a central bore 24 to which a flexible but non-collapsable air-tube 26 is attached. The feed-bar, and the nib which extends over the upper parts of the grooves 18, are mounted in a resilient sleeve 28 which fits tightly but removably in the inner bore 4 of the barrel section 2. The outer bore 5 is slightly enlarged giving clearance between the bore and the nib and feed-bar so as to allow the nib to flex when writing and to form an ink-receiving space around the nib and bar. To fill the pen the sac 6 is collapsed by a lever 9 as usual, the air tube 26 flexing to permit of this. During filling, the grooves 18 and gutters 16 become filled with ink. When writing is commenced, ink in the parts 16, 18 will flow to the nib. A slot 29, Fig. 5 in the section 2 allows air to enter to permit clearing of the grooves 18. Excess ink will first fill the air channel 15, then overflow the walls 17 into the gutters 16 and grooves 18 and finally into the space between the bar and the section 2. When the pen is held with the nib uppermost, the ink will flow from the channels 13, 15 to the reservoir and from the gutters 16 through the grooves 18 and channel 21 to the grooves 22 and channels 13, 15. The surface of the section 2 upon which the fingers rest is chamfered at 30 to form a narrow tapering rib 31 to position the fingers. Caps.-The cap comprises a metal thimble 33 with a lining sleeve 34 of material such as pyroxylin split at its outer end to form resilient tongues 36 which frictionally engage the barrel. A collar 37 is secured to the outer end of the thimble 33 and has resilient arms 38 bowed inwardly to engage and prevent excessive flexing of the tongues 36. Stop shoulders 39 on the collar 37 engage a wear-resisting ring 32 on the barrel which takes the wear due to the tensioning of the arms 38.
