titleOfInvention | An improved manufacture of lubricating greases |
abstract | A stable anhydrous alkaline lubricating grease, not prone to oxidation when used at high temperatures, consists of mineral lubricating oil, one or more metal soaps of a saturated fatty acid, 0.21-1.0 per cent. by weight of excess alkali and 0.01-1.0 per cent. by weight of phenyl alpha or beta naphthylamine. The metal soap is advantageously a metal stearate and preferably a mixture of sodium stearate with an alkaline earth metal stearate or aluminium stearate is employed. The preferred alkali is caustic soda. For comparison purposes, details are given of the oxidation properties of greases containing soda-calcium tallow soap, soda-calcium stearate, soda stearate, soda stearate-tallow soap, soda rapeseed oil soap, soda aluminium stearate or soda barium stearate. Details are also given of the effect on the oxidation properties of a grease containing soda aluminium stearate caused by the addition of phenyl alpha naphthylamine, aldol alpha naphthylamine, beta naphthol, tertiary amyl phenol, ortho- or para-toluidine, triamylamine or triethanolamine stearate and of the effect on the oxidation properties of a grease containing soda barium stearate caused by the addition of phenyl alpha or beta naphthylamine. Samples have been furnished under Sect. 2 (5) of two anhydrous lubricating greases containing mineral lubricating oil, sodium stearate, aluminium stearate, phenyl alpha naphthylamine and free caustic soda. |
