titleOfInvention | Polymers of vinylidene fluoride |
abstract | Vinylidene fluoride is polymerized by heating it at pressures exceeding 10 atmospheres in the presence of a catalyst, e.g. oxygen; benzoyl, benzoylacetyl and propionyl peroxides; diethyl and dipropyl peroxides; tert.-butyl hydroperoxide; hydrogen peroxide; barium, magnesium and zinc peroxides; persulphuric acid and potassium or ammonium persulphates; potassium percarbonate and perphosphate and sodium perborate; hydrazine sulphate and sebacate; trimethylamine oxide; lead tetraethyl and tetraphenyl; lithium butyl; silver acetylide. Promoters include sulphur dioxide, sodium sulphite, bisulphite, hydrosulphite and thiosulphate, ammonium bisulphite, p-toluene-and formamidine-sulphinic acids, dialkyl sulphites, condensation products of alkali metal bisulphites or hydrosulphites with aldehydes,, propargyl alcohol and nickel and iron carbonyls. Suitable liquid media include petroleum ether, benzene, tert.-butyl alcohol, carbon tetrachloride, bromoform, methanol, acetone, dioxane, methyl formate and water, which may contain buffers and dispersing agents, e.g. borax, soaps, alkanesulphonic acids and their salts, sodium alkyl sulphates, quaternary ammonium salts, alkyl betaines, long-chain primary alcohols and polyvinyl alcohol. The process may be carried out batchwise, semi-continuously or continuously. The products are soluble in isooctane, toluene, xylene, methanol, chloroform, carbon tetrachloride, cyclohexanone and dimethyl formamide and may be formed into films and fibres which may be oriented by cold-drawing. Specification 576,071 is referred to. |
