titleOfInvention Improved process of preparing resinous reaction products from polyhydroxy benzenes and formaldehyde
abstract Solutions of resinous products are made by mixing a substantially anhydrous polyhydroxy benzene, having at least two hydroxy groups in only the 1.3.5-positions and having at least two hydrogen atoms attached to the benzene ring, with substantially anhydrous formaldehyde or a polymer thereof in substantially anhydrous methyl alcohol, adding a phenol-aldehyde condensation catalyst in an amount of less than 1 per cent of the weight of the reactants, boiling, cooling, and neutralizing. Polyhydroxy benzenes specified are resorcinol and phloroglucinol, and ethyl or methyl polyhydroxy benzenes. Catalysts specified are ferric chloride, and basic catalysts. In an example, resorcinol and paraformaldehyde are boiled in methyl alcohol in presence of hydrochloric acid, the solution is cooled, more methyl alcohol is added to reduce the viscosity, and the acid is neutralised. The solution is used to impregnate Kraft paper, which may be moulded into a laminated product.
