titleOfInvention Improved manufacture of coated abrasives
abstract 588,578. Coated abrasives. ABBEY, A. (Behr-Manning Corporation). Jan. 17, 1945, No. 1453. [Class 60] A coated abrasive comprises a reinforcing backing 5 with a layer of abrasive grains 7 attached thereto by at least one coat of adhesive 6 between the backing and the grains, and at least one coat of sizing adhesive 8 applied over the grains, the sizing adhesive being insoluble in a sanding lubricant ; and a further coat 9 which is insoluble in but readily swelled or weakened by the sanding lubricant so that, in use, the coat 9 will disintegrate slowly and so decrease the loading and improve the uniformity of the abrading. The backing may be drill cloth or kraft paper, the abrasive silicon carbide, and the adhesive coats hide glue, or in the case of a waterproof " sandpaper," a phenolformaldehyde resin or an oil-modified alkyd resin modified with an oil-soluble phenolic resin. Examples 1-7 describe a coating 9 for use with a water-type lubricant; such coats comprising hide glue, or casein (dissolved with the aid of ammonia), gum karaya, neutralized sulphonated castor oil and triethanolamine oleate, and they may be applied to the " sandpaper " in aqueous vehicle by means such as coating rolls and may be tanned with formaldehyde, paraformaldehyde, potassium bichromate or hexamethylenetetramine and subsequently dried. Example 8 describes a coat 9 for use with an organic solvent such as a petroleum or cyclic hydrocarbon as lubricant, this coat is formed of rubber and paraffin wax emulsified with aqueous ammonium stearate and caseinate and is used in conjunction with an underlying glue coat.
