titleOfInvention Compositions for inhibiting and destroying pathogenic micro-organisms
abstract A composition for destroying or inhibiting the growth of micro-organisms on the skin of animals comprises an aqueous medium such as a solution, gel or aqueous ointment containing a straight chain, branched chain, saturated, unsaturated or halogen substituted mono-carboxylic fatty acid of from three to eleven carbon atoms or a salt thereof together with propyl alcohol. Suitable fatty acids or salts thereof include propionic acid, sodium propionate, nonanoate, heptanoate or undecylenate, triethanolamine propionate, undecylenate or pelangonate, zinc propionate, gold caproate and the potassium, lithium, calcium, ammonium, mercury, silver or other alkanolamine or sodium salts of the acids. Other permissible additions include wetting agents such as "aerosol"; urea or thiocarbamide; other water soluble zinc salts such as zinc stearate; ethyl hydroxy cellulose and carbowax. The pH of the compositions may be adjusted to a value below about 7.5, e.g., by the addition of acetic, citric, hydrochloric, sulphuric or other acids. By drying the solutions containing ethyl hydroxy cellulose, transparent films providing fungistatic coverings for lesions are obtained. These films may be water proofed by painting with glyoxal. Specifications 488,560, 488,561, 488,562 and 499,402 are referred to.
