titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the production of fluid compositions containing solutions of synthetic linear polyamides
abstract Solutions of synthetic linear polyamides of the type described in U.S.A. Specifications 2,071,250, 2,130,948 and Specification 461,236 which are stable at room temperature and are suitable for the production of films and shaped articles, e.g. fibres, bristles, ribbons, sheets, foils, sutures, fishing leaders, safety glass interlayers, golf ball covers or as coating compositions are obtained by dissolving the polyamides in benzaldehyde cyanhydrin or an aliphatic a -hydroxynitrile having not more than 4 carbon atoms in the aliphatic radical. Solution is effected by heating on a bath while stirring and refluxing and various modifying agents may be added, e.g. plasticisers, dyes, pigments, resins, cellulose derivatives, waxes, water repellants, delusterants, antioxidants, oils, antiseptics and flame repellants. The examples specify solutions of (1) polyhyxamethylene adipamide in isobutyraldehyde cyanhydrin. Filaments may be dry-spun from this solution, cold-drawn, twisted and wound; (2) polyhexa methylene sebacamide in formaldehyde cyanhydrin forming a coating composition; (3) an interpolymer of hexamethylene adipamide and sebacamide in acetone cyanhydrin forming a coating composition. Specification 548,560 also is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 refers to the use as solvents of hydroxycyanides generally and specifically refers to acetaldehyde cyanhydrin, beta and gamma hydroxy butyro, beta and gamma hydroxyvalero and epsilon hydroxy-capro cyanides. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
