titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to polymerisation |
abstract | Polymers and copolymers of certain unsaturated organic compounds are obtained by submitting the monomers or mixture of monomers in aqueous dispersion to the action of an oxygen yielding catalyst and a water-soluble substance having a = S = O group. The particular monomers are acrylic and methacrylic esters and acids, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, acrylic and methacrylic amides, styrene, vinyl naphthalene, furylethylene, p vinyl chloride and bromide, vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate and higher carboxylic acid esters, methyl vinyl ketone, phenyl vinyl ketone, methyl isoprophenyl ketone, vinyl methacrylate, allyl methacrylate, ethylene glycol dimethacrylate, ethylidene diacrylate, itaconates, methylenemalonates, N-vinylphthalimide, N-vinylsuccinimide, vinylthiolactate, methyl alpha-chloroacrylate, vinyl ethinyl carbinols, and N-vinylcarbazole. There may be copolymerized with fumaric, maleic, mesaconic and citraconic esters, N-vinylmaleimides, isobutylene, trichloroethylene, butadiene, isoprene, 2-chloro-1 : 3-butadiene, alpha, cyanoprene and 2-phenyl butadiene. Catalysts specified are hydrogen and benzoyl peroxides, percarbonates, perborates, diethyl peroxide, and soluble salts of perdisulphuric acid. Specified water-soluble substances containing a = S = O group are sulphur dioxide, ammonium bisulphite, sodium bisulphite, sodium sulphite, sodium hydrosulphite and thiosulphate, thionates, p-toluene sulphinites, formidine sulphinates and addition products of aldehydes with alkali metal bisulphites, hydrosulphites and dialkyl sulphites. Polymerization may be carried out in an atmosphere of nitrogen, helium, carbon dioxide or methane. Dispersing agents such as polyvinyl alcohol, agar-agar, gelatin, methylated starch, sodium polymethacrylate and modified polymers of ethylene oxide may be added in neutral media; alkali metal or amine soaps of long chain fatty acids, sodium oleate, potassium laurate or triethanolamine stearate in alkaline media; sodium cetyl sulphate, sodium salt of sulphonated paraffin white oil, sodium isopropyl naphthalene sulphonate and the sodium salt of sulphonated oleyl acetate may also be added. The pH may be adjusted by addition of disodium hydrogen phosphate or formic acid. Plasticizers, fillers, stabilizers, pigments, dyes, softeners, natural or synthetic resins may be added to the product. Sheets of the resins can be obtained by hot pressing and these may may be cold rolled or cold drawn. The products may also be cast into films or spun into fibres. Coating compositions may be made from solutions of the resin in dioxan, methyl ethyl ketone, cyclohexanone or ethylene di-chloride. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specifications 573,270, 573,366 and 574,449. |
