titleOfInvention | Dimerization of alpha-alkyl para-alkyl styrenes |
abstract | Dimers of a -alkyl p-alkyl styrenes are produced by mixing monomers having not more than five carbon atoms in either alkyl substituent with 1/2 -10 per cent by weight of a natural clay earth, such as floridin, fullers earth and similar bleaching earths, that has been thermally activated at 200-400 DEG C., heating the mixture to a temperature between 60 DEG C. and the boiling point of the monomer to effect dimerization, removing the catalyst, and separating the dimer. Floridin is heated to 325-375 DEG C. for about 2 hrs. or more, mixed in an amount of 2-5 per cent with a -methyl p-methyl styrene, and heated to 90-100 DEG C. The alkyl substituents, which may be the same or different, also include ethyl, propyl, butyl and amyl. The dimers are liquids of low viscosity, high boiling point, and low freezing point with a dielectric constant of about 2.5 at 100 cycles to 3 megacycles, and a power factor of less than .0001. They are used as plasticizers for vinyl type resins, especially polystyrene, impregnants for capacitors, cable oils, heat-exchange liquids, transformer oils, and solvents. In examples: (1) crude a -methyl p-methyl styrene is treated with 2 per cent activated floridin, at 100 rising to 141 DEG C., for 5 mins., the dimer being separated by fractionation; (2) a -methyl p-ethyl styrene is treated with 4.6 per cent of the same catalyst, at an initial temperature of 180 DEG C., for 63 mins. when the dimer is separated. |
