titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to the electrodeposition of silver |
abstract | 585,107. Electrodeposition of silver. IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Jan. 10, 1945, No. 824. Convention date, Jan. 11, 1944. [Class 41] Silver is deposited from a bath containing silver and alkali metal cyanides with the addition of a small amount of 2-mercaptobenzothiazole, 2-mercaptothiazole, 2-mercaptothiazoline, thioacetanilide or trimercaptocyanuric acid as a brightening agent. A suitable amount of the addition agent is 0.01-1 oz. per U.S.A. gallon, where 2-mercaptobenzothiazole is employed the amount is preferably 0.01-0.5 oz. per U.S.A. gallon. Baths containing potassium cyanide are preferred, but cyanides of sodium, lithium, rubidium or caesium may also be employed. The free alkali-metal cyanide content is preferably 6-12 oz. per U.S.A. gallon. Alkali metal hydroxide or carbonate may also be present. An example of a suitable bath is silver cyanide 10 oz., potassium cyanide 16 oz., potassium hydroxide 1 oz per U.S.A. gallon. The addition agent is preferably dissolved in a small amount of alkali metal hydroxide or of the plating solution before addition. Bright deposits are obtained over a wide range of current density which is extended by movement of the electrodes or bath agitation. The bath temperature may be 21‹-43‹C. |
