titleOfInvention Improvement in conductor rolls of continuous strip electroplating apparatus
abstract 582,153. Electroplating continuous strip. CARNEGIE-ILLINOIS STEEL CORPORATION. May 2, 1944, No. 8261. Convention date, Aug. 28, 1943. [Class 41] A combined conveyer and conductor roll for use in a continuous strip electroplating apparatus, comprises a cylinder of high electrical conductivity having a facing of extreme hardness compared with the strip, the roll being divided into sections by members which, like the shaft, are of high electrical conductivity, facilitating the flow of current between the shaft and the cylinder. A typical electroplating line is described wherein ferrous metal strip is fed through shear, welder, looper pit, tensioning device, anodic pickling tank, rinsing and scrubbing machine, plating unit, recovery apparatus for electrolyte, rinsing and scrubbing unit, steam spray apparatus, air cooler, and on to roller bed through rubber covered pulling rolls, Figs. 1, 1a (not shown). In passing through the plating unit the strip passes between conductor rolls 12a and pressure rolls 12c, between anodes 13 immersed in the electrolyte and under rubber covered sink rolls 12b. The conductor roll 12a is supported in anti-friction bearings 102 on a framework 88, 98, 100 from which it is insulated at 105. The roll comprises a hollow tubular member 30, a shaft 38 and diaphragms 58, all of copper, steel end casings 34, insulation covers 52, current collector drums 42, a water flinger 78 and has a chromium surface 32 as in Specification 555,430. The shaft 38 is in two parts threadedly connected at 40, and has an entrance bore 64 through which cooling water passes, via openings 66 into the inside of the roll, thence through apertures 60 in diaphragms 58 and a pipe 72 into an outlet bore 74. End casings 34 are a driving fit in the member 30 and fit over the shaft 38 with watertight lead packing 56, flanges 138 being provided to throw off any water leaking from the roll and prevent it from reaching drums 42. Diaphragms 58 are welded at 122, 68 to the member 30 and the shaft 38 respectively.
