[Class 40 (v)] Apparatus for directional transmission or reception of electromagnetic waves comprises a wave guide or radiating resonator having a number of angularly-disposed branches with slots or apertures or other means for interchanging energy between its interior and its exterior. Two or more of such combined resonators may be arranged side by side to increase the directivity, as in a broadside array of radiating antennĀµ. The apparatus may be given a scanning movement as in radiolocation. Fig. 1, which illustrates the principle of the invention, shows a wave guide producing a conical wave front, the guide 1 being energized by a doublet 3 and perforated at 5 to allow energy to radiate into the surrounding space, the guide being several wave-lengths long and having several perforations within a wavelength. Fig. 2 shows two guides 31, 31<1> energized in phase by doublets 3, 3<1> and perforated as shown, thereby producing a fanshaped beam which is flat in the plane of the paper and fan-shaped in the plane at right angles thereto. The perforations or the width of the slot may vary as a function of the distance along the guide, to determine the directivity. Any energy which reaches the ends of the guides may be absorbed at 9, and the guide may have a longitudinal fin extending radially inwardly to prevent rotation of the plane of polarization. Fig. 10 shows apparatus for radiolocation comprising two rectangular guides 41, 41<1> energized in phase by a quarter-wave antenna 44 and mounted so that they may be moved in azimuth and elevation by motors 42, 43. The slots 15, 15<1> are formed between ground plates 35, 35<1> which are extensions of the guide proper. The angle between the guides may be adjusted by rod 11 and energy reaching the end of the guides may be absorbed by carbon plates 19 and reflected by plates 33.
