titleOfInvention | Preparation of solid and semi-solid polymers of olefinic hydrocarbons |
abstract | <FORM:0579894/IV/1> Solid and semi-solid polymers and interpolymers of olefinic hydrocarbons are made by polymerizing at elevated temperature and pressure, separating the gaseous and non-gaseous constituents of the reaction mixture at two or more pressures and recycling the gases at these pressures with recompression to the polymerization pressure if necessary. Catalysts, e.g. oxygen; hydrogen, diethyl, lauroyl, tetralin, urea, butyryl and benzoyl peroxides; persuccinic acid; alkali and alkaline earth metal and ammonium persulphates, perborates and percarbonates may be present. Olefines specified are ethylene, propylene and isobutylene, which may be interpolymerized with styrene; vinyl acetate, formate and isobutyrate; vinyl chloride; vinyl ethers; divinyl formal and butyral; methyl vinyl ketone; acrylic, methacrylic, itaconic, crotonic and fumaric acids and their esters, acid halides, amides and anhydrides. Ethylene from a gas holder 1 is compressed by a compressor 2 to 150 to 500 atmospheres and passed into a cooler 3 or 3a. Benzene may be introduced into the ethylene stream from a storage vessel 5 by an injector 6. The gas is further compressed to 800 to 4000 atmospheres by an injector 7 and introduced into a converter 8. Water from a storage tank 4 is mixed with the catalyst in a vessel 4a and also introduced into converter 8 by an injector 9. The converter temperature is controlled to a value between 40 DEG and 400 DEG C. The pressure of the mixture is reduced by a reducing valve 10 to between 150 and 500 atmospheres, the gases, separated in a separator 11 from the liquids and solids, returning after cooling to the initial compressed, ethylene stream. The liquids and solids pass through an extrusion valve 12 into a second separator 13, which is kept below 150 atmospheres and preferably at atmospheric pressure, from which the product is extruded through an extrusion valve and the gases are returned to the initial ethylene stream, preferably after cooling in a cooler 14. The two coolers 3 and 3a are employed alternately for cooling the ethylene, which is recycled at a pressure between 150 and 500 atmospheres, so that the process may operate continuously. Specifications 471,590 and 497,643 are referred to. |
