abstract | 1 : 3-dienes are polymerized in aqueous emulsion in the presence of a compound of the formula <FORM:0578214/IV/1> in which R1 is a hydrocarbon radicle and R2 is either hydrogen or a hydrocarbon radicle, e.g. methyl phosphine, ethyl phosphine, propyl phosphine, decyl phosphine, dimethyl phosphine, diethyl phosphine, didecyl phosphine, isopropyl phosphine, (methyl-2, ethyl-3) butyl phosphine, cyclohexyl phosphine, naphthyl phosphine, tolyl phosphine and diphenyl phosphine, 1 : 3-dienes specified are 1 : 3-butadiene, isoprene, 2 : 3-dimethyl butadiene, chloroprene and bromoprene. Interpolymers may be obtained with styrene, vinyl chloride, methyl methacrylate, vinyl acetate, vinyl propionate, vinyl thioacetate, ethyl methacrylate, cyclohexyl methacrylate, cyclohexyl phenyl methacrylate, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, methacrylic acid, methacrylamide, methacrylic anilide, vinyl butyrate, N-alkyl methacrylamide, N-alkylacrylamides, vinyl acrylate, ethyl acrylate, butyl methacrylate, octyl methacrylate, dodecyl methacrylate, methyl vinyl lactone, ethyl vinyl ether and butyl vinyl. Catalysts such as persulphates, ferricyanides, inorganic peroxides, perborates and percarbonates may be used. Other optional additions to the emulsion are acetic acid, wood rosin, sodium salts of sulphated oleyl acetate and of dinaphthylmethane sulphonic acids, oleic acid and sodium hydroxide. Coagulation is effected by acetic acid and sodium chloride. Curing is effected by heating in steam with phenyl a -naphthylamine, magnesium oxide, zinc oxide, carbon black and wood rosin. The anti-oxidants of U.S.A. Specifications 2,259,122, 2,234,203 and 2,234,211 may be added. The sulphur compounds specified in U.S.A. Specifications 2,234,215 and 2,234,204 and Specifications 497,638 and 497,706 may be used in addition to the phosphine compound. |
