titleOfInvention Colouration of textile materials
abstract Cellulose ester or ether textile material is coloured by mechanically impregnating the material with an aqueous dispersion of a vat dye, subjecting the impregnated material to the action of an aqueous alkaline reducing bath containing sodium hydrosulphite and sodium carbonate, and then oxidising the leuco compound so formed to the parent dye on the material. The impregnation may be effected, for example, by padding or spraying. The aqueous dispersion may contain dispersing agents such as turkey red oil or lauryl sulphate. In the example, a cellulose acetate fabric is padded with an aqueous dispersion of Indanthrene khaki 2GA, dried in a tower with hot air, treated on a jig with an aqueous solution containing sodium hydrosulphite and sodium carbonate, washed with water, treated in an aqueous bath containing sodium bichromate, scoured and dried. Other vat dyes specified are Indanthrene black brown VA, Indanthrene direct black RDS or RBA, Calcoloid blue BLD, Calcosol olive green BN, Calcosol brown R and Calcoloid grey GD. Other oxidising agents specified are sodium perborate and ammonium persulphate. Other textile materials specified are those of cellulose propionate, butyrate, aceto-propionate or aceto-butyrate and ethyl or benzyl cellulose. Besides fabrics other forms of textile materials such as yarns, filaments or staple fibre in the form of a top or roving, may be so dyed.
