titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the production and esterification of esterifiable nitroparaffin derivatives
abstract The methylolation of nitroparaffins by means of formaldehyde or paraformaldehyde is effected in the presence of a polyhydric alcohol. A basic catalyst may be used such as potassium hydroxide or carbonate. The resulting mixture, after neutralization and filtration may be directly esterified, e.g. by acetylation or nitration. In examples, trimethylolnitromethane in admixture with glycerine is obtained by dissolving potassium hydroxide in glycerine and heating with paraformaldehyde. In other examples, ethyleneglycol and a commercial mixture of nitroparaffins are used as components. The following products are also mentioned: monomethylolnitromethane, monomethyloldimethylnitromethane, dimethylolnitromethane and dimethylolnitroethane.
