titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to solutions of synthetic linear polyamides |
abstract | A synthetic linear polyamide is dissolved in a solvent consisting wholly or in part of a mono-b -nitro derivative of a primary monohydric aliphatic alcohol of 2-8 carbon atoms or of an alkyl derivative thereof, the alkyl group containing 2-5 carbon atoms and being attached to the same carbon atom as the nitro group. Suitable solvents are 2-nitro-1-ethanol; 2-nitro-1-butanol; 2-nitro-1-propanol; 2-nitro-1 - hexanol; 2 - nitro - 1 - octanol; 2 - nitro - 2 - methyl-1-propanol; 2-nitro-2-ethyl-1-propanol; 2-nitro-2-butyl-1-propanol or mixtures thereof. The nitro alcohols may be mixed with other solvent or diluents. An example of a mixed solvent is 2-nitro-1-butanol, ethylene chlorhydrin and benzyl alcohol. The polyamides are of the type described in Specifications 461,236 and 461,237, or interpolyamides may be prepared from combinations of tetramethylene diamine, pentamethylenediamine, hexamethylenediamine, octamethylenediamine and decamethylene diamine and adipic, sebacic, suberic and azelaic acids. The compositions may include plasticisers, dyes, pigments, resins, cellulose derivatives, waxes, water-repellants, lustre modifying agents, antioxidants, oils, antiseptics and flame-repellants. The solutions may be used as coating or impregnating compositions, for forming films or for making various shaped articles. |
