titleOfInvention | Process of manufacturing fibres, filaments, threads, films and the like, from solutions of proteins, especially casein |
abstract | Artificial filaments, fibres, threads, films and the like are obtained by extruding protein solutions, obtained with the aid of an alkali metal hydroxide and containing less than 0.8 gram molecules of free alkali per kilogram of protein, into acid coagulating baths. The solutions may also contain small amounts of non-alkaline or weakly alkaline substances such as urea, thiourea, or the like which in large amounts are capable of dissolving unneutralized protein. Protein solutions containing very low contents of free alkali or no free alkali or even those obtained with such small amounts of alkali that the acidity of the protein has not been neutralised completely may be used. The solutions may be spun with or without a previous ripening step. The solutions may be heated to a temperature above 60 DEG C. for some minutes or hours to reduce the viscosity to a value at which the solutions can be easily filtered or to reduce the rate of decrease of viscosity when the solutions are subsequently kept at temperatures in the region of 25 DEG C. Preservatives such as thymol, phenol, cresol, b - naphthol, hypochlorites, salicylic aldehyde, or salts of heavy metals, may be added to the protein solutions. The solutions may be pasteurized or sterilized. Proteins of low ash content such as casein may be used. The protein used, e.g. casein from milk, may be initially in the acid condition in which it is obtained. In examples, spinning solutions are prepared from casein, water and caustic soda with or without a small proportion of urea. |
