abstract | N-Methylpiperidinol-4 or its salts, e.g. the hydrochloride, phosphate, sulphate, tartrate, oxalate, malate or succinate are treated with mandelic acid in dilute acid solution to yield either the mandelate or the corresponding salt of this ester. In an example: N-methylpiperidinol hydrochloride and mandelic acid are heated at 95 DEG C. with 10 per cent hydrochloric acid for 40 hours, prior to diluting with water, extracting unreacted mandelic acid with ether, and making the aqueous layer alkaline with sodium carbonate, followed by re-extraction with ether and treatment of the ethereal solution with gaseous hydrogen chloride to isolate the product. |
