abstract | A method of preparing vinyl chloride-vinylidene chloride copolymers, containing from 10 to 25 per cent by weight of vinylidene chloride, of improved strength by incorporating a guanidine in the copolymer and then heating. A phenol-formaldehyde type resin may be added together with the guanidine. Preferred guanidines are aromatic or aryl-substituted, particularly the di- and tri-substituted aryl guanidines. Specific examples are diphenyl, diortho tolyl, triphenyl, tritolyl, phenyl tolyl, dixylyl, dialphanaphthyl, dicyclohexyl, and diortho methyl cyclohexyl, guanidine and guanidine salts such as the acetate and carbonate. Specified phenol-formaldehyde type resins are cresol-formaldehyde, phenol-formaldehyde, xylenol - formaldehyde, resorcinol-formaldehyde and phenol - furfural resins. Further additions may be acid inhibitors or acceptors such as magnesium oxide, sodium carbonate, and magnesium carbonate, plasticizers such as dibutyl sebacate, methoxy ethyl oleate, dioctyl phthalate and tributyl phosphate, and pigments such as carbon black. In examples a vinyl chloride-vinylidene chloride copolymer was compounded with: (1) dibutyl sebacate, magnesium oxide, carbon black and (a) diphenyl guanidine, (b) diortho tolylguanidine, and (c) triphenyl guanidine; (2) with methoxy ethyl oleate, magnesium oxide, carbon black, diphenyl guanidine, soyabean, lecithin and whiting. Specification 572,875 is referred to. |
