titleOfInvention | Improvements in or relating to cementing of polymethyl methacrylate surfaces |
abstract | The process for cementing articles of methyl methacrylate resins which comprises bringing into contact a surface of a cast methyl methacrylate resin article, with a surface of a cast or moulded methyl methacrylate resin article under conditions whereby the latter surface is moistened with an organic liquid which will dissolve the surface and the former surface is, immediately prior to bringing it in contact with the latter surface, pliable and at a temperature not less than 5 DEG C. above its softening temperature. The term "methyl methacrylate resin" includes polymers and interpolymers. Organic liquids of boiling points above 80 DEG C. are preferred, e.g., cyclohexanone, xylene, benzyl alcohol, dichlorobenzene and methyl methacrylate monomer. Plasticizers, dyes, pigments and fillers may be present. In an example, a concave surface of polymethyl methacrylate sheet was given two coatings of cyclohexanone and a strip of polymethyl methacrylate previously treated to 135 DEG C., placed on the surface and pressed, forming a reinforced joint. Specifications 567,777 and 567,778 are referred to. |
