titleOfInvention Improvements in and relating to the production of nitro-paraffins
abstract Nitroparaffins are produced by heating paraffins with nitric acid in the gaseous phase in the presence of a catalyst comprising a silicate glass, which contains arsenic and/or antimony. The catalyst is used in the form of fragments or capillary tubing in order to present a large surface area. Nitration is carried out above 300 DEG C. and at atmospheric or higher pressures. In the example, propane is passed through a chamber in which nitric acid is vaporized, and the mixed gases are passed through the catalyst chamber maintained at 390 DEG C. and containing a borosilicate glass prepared by fusing together silica, potassium, calcium and magnesium carbonates, arsenic, aluminium and zinc oxides, borax and boric acid. The nitroparaffins are separated from the reaction product and consist chiefly of 2-nitropropane, with some 1-nitropropane, nitroethane and nitro-methane.
