abstract | A composition comprising an aqueous colloidal suspension of anthracite coal having less than ten per cent by weight of volatile matter and a relatively non-reactive water-soluble organic film-forming agent. Film forming agents specified are gum arabic, gum tragacanth, gum gatti, polyvinyl alcohol, methyl cellulose and casein glue. The coal is subjected to milling in water until it has been reduced to a substantially colloidal condition and the film-forming agent then added. Stabilisers such as ammonia may also be present. The coating may be applied either as a paint to insulated conductors or as a semi-conducting tape comprising a fabric material such as glass, cotton or asbestos fibres impregnated with the coating. An overcoating of weather-resistant paint or enamel, and an undercoating comprising a solution of polyisobutylene or high grade asphalt may be applied with the fibrous tape. |
