titleOfInvention | Isomerizing hydrocarbons |
abstract | Saturated hydrocarbons containing 4 to 9 carbon atoms are isomerised by treatment with a fluid catalyst melt comprising a molecular excess of an aluminium halide, at least one halide selected from alkali metal, beryllium, magnesium, zinc, and cadmium halides, and a promoting amount of a halide of a metal of Group V, a halide of an element of the sulphur group, or a halide of a metal of the iron group, e.g. arsenic trichloride, antimony trichloride, bismuth trichloride, vanadium trichloride, sulphur monochloride, tellurium dichloride, nickel chloride, or cobaltous chloride. HCl may be present in the process. Examples give the isomerisation of butane. The process may also be applied to the conversion of methyl cyclopentane, dimethylcyclopentane, and methyl cyclohexane to cyclohexane, methyl cyclohexane, and dimethyl cyclopentane respectively. |
