titleOfInvention | Copolymers |
abstract | Copolymers are produced by polymerizing 5 to 40 parts of a dialkyl fumarate and 60 to 95 parts of a vinyl halide, e.g. vinyl chloride or bromide, in an emulsion having a pH of 7 to 9. Esters specified are the dimethyl, diethyl, dipropyl, dibutyl, diisobutyl, di-sec-butyl, dioctadecyl, di-2-ethyl-hexyl diethoxyethyl, dicyclohexyl and ditetrahydrofurfuryl fumarates. Suitable catalysts are hydrogen, barium, calcium, dibenzoyl, acetyl-benzoyl or diacetyl peroxides, persulphuric acid, sodium and potassium perborates, percarbonates or persulphates. Suitable emulsifying agents are soap, sodium oleate, sodium lauryl sulphate and sodium naphthalene sulphonate. Suitable buffering agents are acetic acid/sodium acetate, citric acid/disodium phosphate and sulphuric acid/disodium phosphate. The products are generally soluble in solvents such as ethylene dichloride and methyl ethyl ketone. Pigments, fillers, lubricants and plasticizers, e.g. dibutyl sebacate, dibutoxy-ethyl phthalate, organo phosphate and borates and hydrocarbons may be added. The copolymers may be used for making moistureproof film and elastic sheets, lining tanks, laminating or impregnating films and for coating can interiors. Specification 476,727 is referred to. |
