titleOfInvention | Reinforced plastic material and the production thereof |
abstract | A reinforced material, e.g. in sheet, board, block, tube or rod form, comprises a plastic material and an embedded fleece composed of long, unentangled, approximately parallel straightened metallic shavings. Several fleeces may be superimposed with the filaments in adjacent layers crossing. Groups of filaments are taken from different cutters of a metal wool making machine, and led into close parallelism, to form a band or web, which may be wound on a roller, with interleaved paper, for storage, and later used as required. The filaments may be straightened by combing, and resinous threads or soft metal clamps may be affixed at intervals to preserve parallelism. The plastic material, which may be applied in solution, molten, mixed with water, or in a dry powdered form and fused in situ, may comprise viscose, cellulose, or cellulose derivatives, latex, natural or artificial rubber, synthetic resins, gums, dextrin agar agar, gum tragacanth, glue, bone dust, casein, yeast, stearin, paraffin wax, potato powder or paste, thickened sulphite lye, colophony, cement, lime, gypsum, waterglass, glass powder, asphalt, bitumin tar, or pitch singly or in admixture. The filaments may be cleaned, degreased, and coated with waterglass, oil paint, chlorinated rubber, galvanised, or plated with nickel or chromium. Vegetable, animal, and mineral fibrous and powdered fillers, pigments or colours, may be added to and applied between layers. The plastic material may comprise a mixture of calcium sulphate, magnesite, glass powder, casein, kieselguhr and lead oxide mixed with a pulp of sawdust which has been wetted with a solution containing magnesium chloride, sulphuric acid, and gum tragacanth, or may comprise sawdust mixed with a solution of casein in dilute aqueous ammonia. The fleece of metal filaments may be impregnated by the method described in Specification 559,683, [Group VIII]. |
