titleOfInvention New synthetic oestrogenic agents
abstract Triphenylethylenes of the formula <FORM:0566415/IV/1> wherein X is a chlorine or bromine atom and R is hydrogen, methoxy or ethoxy, are produced by the interaction of the correspondingly substituted triphenylethylene of the formula <FORM:0566415/IV/2> or of the correspondingly substituted triphenylethanol of the formula <FORM:0566415/IV/3> with an approximately equi-molecular proportion of bromine or chlorine, in solution in an inert organic solvent. In examples: (i) a -p-anisyl - a - p - phenetyl - b - phenylethanol and (ii) a - b - di - p - anisyl - a - p - phenetyl - ethanol were dissolved in glacial acetic acid and a glacial acetic acid solution of bromine was added thereto, thereby precipitating a -p-anisyl-a -p-phenetyl-b -phenyl-bromoethylene, and a -b -di-p-anisyl-a -p-phenetyl-bromoethylene, respectively; (iii) a -p-anisyl-a -p-phenetyl-b -phenylethylene is treated as in examples (i) and (ii) to give a -p-anisyl-a -p-phenetyl-b -phenyl-bromoethylene; (iv) as in example (i) using chlorine instead of bromine to give the corresponding chloro-product, viz. a -p-anisyl-a -p-phenetyl-b -phenyl-chloroethylene. a - p - Anisyl - a - p - phenetyl - b - phenyl - ethanol is made by a Grignard reaction between p-anisyl magnesium bromide and p-ethoxy-disoxybenzoin or between benzyl magnesium chloride and p - methoxy - p1 - ethoxy benzophenone. a - b - di - p - Anisyl - a - p - phenetyl - ethanol is made by a Grignard reaction between desoxyanisoin and p - phenetyl magnesium bromide. a - p - Anisyl - a - p - phenetyl - b - phenyl - ethanol is made by dehydrating the correspondingly substituted triphenylethanol with a dehydrating agent such as sulphuric acid.
