titleOfInvention Coating compositions
abstract A coating composition comprises a polyvinyl halide and 2 to 100 per cent of a heat hardening alkyl-substituted or polynuclear phenol-formaldehyde resin. The polyvinyl halide includes co-polymers, e.g. polyvinyl halide-esters, and halogenated polyvinyl halides. Solvents, plasticizers, pigments and other resins may be added. Suitable phenol formaldehyde resins are those made from p-tert-butyl-phenol, 2,2-di-(4 - hydroxyphenol) - propane and p - hydroxydiphenyl. Examples describe (1) mixing a vinyl chloride-vinyl acetate copolymer, methyl ethyl, ketone and a solution in toluene of p-tert-butyl-phenol-formaldehyde resin, applying to a metal surface and heating at 350 DEG F.; (2) mixing chlorinated polyvinyl chloride, methyl, ethyl ketone and a solution in ethyl alcohol of 2,2 - di -(4 - hydroxyphenyl) - propane - formaldehyde resin, similarly coating a metal surface and heating. Specifications 339,271, [Class 2 (iii)], and 553,437 are referred to.
