titleOfInvention | Improvements relating to the production of hydrocarbons |
abstract | In the catalytic production of hydrocarbons by reacting carbon monoxide with hydrogen in a liquid medium, the latter is prepared by dissolving a salt of the catalytically active metal in an organic inert liquid such as a hydrocarbon of high boiling point or a fraction of the reaction products themselves. Salts specified are those of fatty acids of high molecular weight such as stearic, palmitic and lauric acids, salts of resin acids and salts of acids of lower molecular weight such as the acetoacetates. Metals mentioned are nickel and cobalt, particularly when used in conjunction with copper or manganese, and with such actuators as thoria, alumina, magnesia and zinc oxide, which may be suspended in the solution of metal salt; iron also is referred to. According to the example, metallic cobalt and copper are dissolved in nitric acid, and after mixing with thorium nitrate solution, sodium carbonate is added to precipitate the carbonates, which are then dissolved in lauric acid; the product is added to a fraction of the oil from a previous synthesis, when first a current of hydrogen is passed through the solution at 195-200 DEG C. for some hours and then a mixture of carbon monoxide with twice its volume of hydrogen whilst maintaining the same temperature; the products are removed by distillation as they are formed. Specification 505,121 is referred to. |
