titleOfInvention | Water-soluble carboxyethyl cellulose ether |
abstract | A water-soluble carboxy ethyl cellulose ether is obtained by reacting cellulose in the temperature range of 5-35 DEG C. with an aqueous solution containing about 10-40 per cent of a strongly basic water-soluble hydroxide and at least one molecular proportion of acrylonitrile per glucose unit of the cellulose, the amount of hydroxide being at least molecularly equivalent to the acrylonitrile, and the reaction is continued until the reaction mixture is capable of forming a homogeneous solution with water, even when acidified. The initial material may be cotton, regenerated cellulose, cellulose obtained from wood pulp by removal of lignin and resins, or cellulose obtained from flax or other bast fibres. The hydroxide may be caustic soda or potash, or a quaternary ammonium hydroxide, such as benzyl trimethyl or dibenzyl dimethyl ammonium hydroxide. The cellulose in finely divided or fibrous form may be mixed with the hydroxide solution and the acrylonitrile is then added. The alkali-cellulose may be aged before adding the acrylonitrile. The carboxyethyl cellulose ether may be isolated by neutralising the reaction mixture with an acid such as acetic, hydrochloric, or sulphuric acid, and precipitating the ether by addition of water-miscible organic liquid, such as methyl or ethyl alcohol or acetone. The ether need not be isolated, since the neutralised or acidified reaction solution may be used directly for many purposes, e.g. as a thickening agent for printing pastes, coating materials, sizes, and the like, and as a protective colloid for stabilizing emulsions. |
