titleOfInvention | Purification of 3-picoline |
abstract | 3-Picoline is purified from 4-picoline and/or 2,6-lutidine by heating with an organic acid anhydride or halide (chloride, bromide, or iodide), whereby the impurities are converted to complex non-volatile products and the 3-picoline may be separated as by distillation, or by chemical means. A condensation catalyst, such as zinc chloride, may be added. Phthalic anhydride, stearic anhydride, butyric anhydride, acetic anhydride, acetyl chloride, bromide, or iodide, benzoyl chloride or p-toluenesulphonyl chloride may be used. |
