titleOfInvention Plastics
abstract A plasticizer is incorporated into a waterinsoluble thermoplastic cellulose derivative by dissolving the cellulose derivative in a hot homogeneous liquid medium comprising the solvent-plasticizer and one or more volatile liquids, this medium being a solvent when hot but a non-solvent when cold, and the volatile part of this medium being a non-solvent even when hot, cooling the solution and then removing the bulk of the volatile liquid from the plasticized cellulose derivative. Preferably, the proportions of plasticizer, non-solvent and cellulose derivative are such that on cooling the solution solidifies as a whole, instead of separating into a solid phase and a liquid phase, and preferably the proportions are such that by the time the solution has been cooled to about 25 DEG C. it has solidified in granular form. The hot solution may be filtered. The nonsolvent may be a single liquid or a mixture of liquids. Ethanol, methanol, or propanols, may be used alone or mixed with water. Solutions in which the ratio of cellulose derivative plus plasticizer to non-solvent is between 60 : 40 and 70 : 30 are generally most suitable. In an example, a solution of cellulose acetate in a mixture of ethanol and dimethyl phthalate is made at 75-80 DEG C. It is then cooled while being stirred and a powder suitable for compression or injection moulding or extrusion is obtained. The alcohol is removed by evaporation. Instead of dimethyl phthalate, tri-(monochlorethyl) phosphate may be used. In other examples, hot solutions of ethyl cellulose are prepared, using ethanol, water and tricresyl phosphate. Other plasticizers which may be used are diethyl phthalate and dibutyl phthalate. Moulding powders are obtained on cooling the solutions. For cellulose acetate, the plasticizer may be diethyl phthalate, dimethoxy-ethyl phthalate, methyl phthalyl ethyl glycolate, or triacetin. Small amounts of plasticizers of low or no solvent power, e.g. triphenyl-, tricresyl-, or tributyl-phosphate, in the case of cellulose acetate, may be used. Other cellulose esters or ethers may be treated, e.g. cellulose acetate-stearate or ethyl hexyl cellulose. Dyes, pigments, ultra-violet ray absorbers, substances which polarize transmitted light, wood flour, asbestos, cellulosic fibres, barium sulphate, or other substances may be incorporated in the compositions. The plasticized stock may be used in the production of laminated materials, e.g. fabrics for collars, shirt fronts, belts, straps, or sweat bands, fabrics for aircraft, and materials such as plywood and fibre-board. The plasticized material may be used as a binder for sawdust or wood chips in the production of mouldable constructional materials. Specification 559,468 is referred to. The Provisional Specification refers also to the use of organic polymers other than cellulose derivatives, e.g. polyvinyl acetate, chloride and acetate-chloride, polystyrene, polymethyl or ethyl-acrylate or methacrylate.
