[Class 123 (i)] Precipitation of calcium and magnesium compounds from water is prevented by the addition of 1-10 parts per million of at least one soluble polyphosphate, (i.e., one containing two or more phosphorus atoms in the acid radicle) and 5-20 parts per million of at least one polyhydric phenol or nuclear substituent thereof in which at least two nuclear hydroxy groups are adjacent. Preferred materials are sodium hexametaphosphate Na 6 P 6 O 18 , and pyrophosphate Na 4 P 2 O 7 , gallic acid, pyrogallol and catechol, or salts such as sodium gallate.
