titleOfInvention | Production of polymerized resin acid derivatives |
abstract | 557,512. Polymerized resin acid derivatives. HERCULES POWDER CO. Nov. 12, 1941, No. 14584. Convention date, May 3, 1941. [Class 2 (iii)] Polymerized resin alcohols are prepared by treating a polymerized resin acid, an ester thereof, polymerized rosin or an ester thereof with hydrogen, so as to reduce the carboxyl group of the starting material to the primary alcohol group. According to conditions, polymerized resin alcohols or polymerized hydrogenated resin alcohols are obtained. Reduction may be accomplished by treating the starting material with an alkali metal and a lower aliphatic alcohol, and thereafter hydrolysing the resulting alcoholate to the alcohol, or the starting material may be reacted with hydrogen in the presence of a conversion catalyst, thereby producing a polymerized hydrogenated resin alcohol. Many starting materials are specified, and examples are given in which:-(1) the methyl ester of polymerized rosin is treated with metallic sodium and anhydrous n-butyl alcohol ; (2) the methyl ester of polymerized d-pimaric acid is treated with metallic sodium and anhydrous n-butyl alcohol; (3) polymerized abietic acid, in solution in dioxane, is heated in a pressure bomb with hydrogen in the presence of a copper chromite catalyst ; (4) the methyl ester of polymerized sapinic acid is treated as in example (3) ; (5) the dimer of abietic acid is treated as in example (3) ; (6) the dimer of abietic acid is treated as in example (1). |
