titleOfInvention Esters of acrylic acids
abstract 556,036. α-Substituted acrylic acid esters ; resinous polymerization products. WINGFOOT CORPORATION. May 16, 1941, No. 6345. Convention date, June 7, 1940. [Class 2 (iii)] Monocyclic terpene esters of α-substituted acrylic acids are obtained by reaction of the acid or a halide or lower alkyl ester thereof with a monocyclic terpene alcohol or by reaction of a salt of the acid with a monocyclic terpene halide. Specified α-substituted acrylic acids are α- chloroacrylic, methacrylic, ethacrylic, propacrylic, chloromethylacrylic and α-chloroethylacrylic acids and specified terpene alcohols are α- and #-terpineols, menthol, carvomenthol, carveol, dihydrocarveol, pulegol, terpin and alkyl derivatives thereof, e.g. 2-methylcarveol. An ester-interchange catalyst, such as sulphuric acid or sodium methylate may be present when a lower alkyl ester is used as starting material. An inhibitor such as hydroquinone or N-phenyl- #-naphthylamine may be present to prevent polymerization during the reaction. In the absence of such an inhibitor the products polymerize rapidly on standing, and more rapidly in presence of a polymerization catalyst such as benzoyl peroxide or sodium perborate, to clear glassy tough products, soluble in ethylene dichloride or chloroform; they also undergo interpolymerization with monomeric vinyl compounds, such as butadiene, styrene, vinylidene chloride, vinyl chloride, acrylonitrile, methacrylonitrile, ethacrylonitrile, 2- cyano-butadiene, 2-chloro-butadiene or vinyl acetate. Examples are given of the interpolymerization of (1) any one of the terpene esters with butadiene in an aqueous emulsion containing carbon tetrachloride, sodium perborate and sodium lauryl sulphate, buffered with citric acid and disodium phosphate, (2) a mixture of α- and #-terpineyl methacrylates with butadiene, with or without styrene or acrylonitrile, in various proportions in an aqueous emulsion containing carbon tetrachloride, sodium perborate and sodium oleate. Specification 468,890 is referred to. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the similar formation of esters from other than monocyclic terpene alcohols and from acrylic acid or a substitution product thereof in general, and specifies the use of fenchyl and isofenchyl alcohols. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted.
