titleOfInvention | Improvements in and relating to compositions comprising cellulose derivatives |
abstract | 555,444. Cellulose derivative compositions, films etc.; coated fabrics morpholine compounds. BRITISH THOMSON-HOUSTON CO., Ltd. Oct. 30, 1941, No. 13965. Convention date, Nov. 1, 1940. [Classes 2 (ii) and 2 (iii)] [Also in Group VIII] Cellulose derivative plastic or coating compositions comprise an aryl sulphonyl morpholine as plasticizer and moistureproofing ingredient. The morpholine compounds used have the general formula X-SO 2 N(C 2 H 4 ) 2 O, where X is any aryl radical. Thus X may be phenyl, halogeno aryl, alkylated aryl, hydroxylated aryl, alkoxy aryl, aryloxyaryl, or naphthyl. The sulphonyl morpholine compound may be benzene-, para-toluene-, o-ethylphenyl-, pmethylphenyl-, p-hydroxyphenyl-, naphthalene- 2.4.6.-trichlorophenyl-, p-butoxyphenyl-, or p- (#-acetoxy) ethylphenyl-, sulphonyl morpholine. The cellulose derivative may be an acetate, nitrate, butyrate, oleate, stearate, phthalate, naphthenate, laurate, aceto-maleate, or other ester, or ethyl, benzyl; hydroxyethyl, or other cellulose ether or ether-ester.. The proportion of morpholine compound incorporated in the composition may be 5-100 or more parts per 100 parts of cellulose derivative. The composition may contain solvents, diluents, and plasticizers, e.g. dilauryl phthalate, esters of benzoyl benzoic acid, or dicyclohexyl adipate. Waxes or wax-like compounds, may be present e.g. paraffin, petrolatum, beeswax, carnauba, candelilla, or chlorinated hydrocarbons. Resins may be included, e.g. dammar, copal, kauri, hydrogenated rosin or rosin esters, ester gums, alkyd resins, phenol-formaldehyde resins,. polyvinyl resins, chlorinated diphenyl compounds, or ethyl abietate. The composition may include castor oil, pigments, dyes, matting agents,' mould lubricants, and fillers. The compositions may be used as lacquers, enamels, or insulating coatings for wires. They may be used for coating paper, cotton or regenerated cellulose fabrics, or rubber hydrochloride or other rubber derivative films. They may be moulded under heat and pressure. They may be cast to form films or extruded, e.g. to form tubing. In an example a coating or film-forming composition comprises cellulose acetate, benzene- or ptoluene-sulphonyl morpholine, acetone, absolute alcohol, and ethylene glycol monomethyl ether. The solution is poured on a glass plate through a fine screen and the dried film is stripped from the plate. Benzene sulphonyl morpholine is prepared by slowly adding a solution of morpholine in cold water to benzene sulphonyl chloride with vigorous shaking and cooling. After several hours, the crystals of benzene sulphonyl morpholine are filtered from the aqueous solution and washed. Para-toluene sulphonyl morpholine is made in a similar manner. After washing and recrystallizing from alcohol solution, the p-toluene compound is rendered neutral by treatment with dilute caustic soda solution and thorough washing with water. Aryl sulphonyl morpholines may also be obtained by heating aryl sulphonic acids with morpholine. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of aryl sulphonyl morpholines containing alkyl, aryl and other substituents in the morpholine nucleus. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. |
