titleOfInvention | Improvements relating to the manufacture of magnesium products from sea water, brine or the like |
abstract | 549,492. Magnesium compounds. OCEAN SALTS (PRODUCTS), Ltd., PRYTHERCH, W. E., ANDERSON, J. H., and ADAMS, B. A. April 29, 1941, Nos. 5564, 5565 and 5566. [Classes 1 (i) and 1 (iii)] Magnesium hydroxide is obtained from brine and like waters by the following steps: lime is added to the water in sufficient quantity to precipitate calcium carbonate and magnesium hydroxide and to give a mother liquor containing magnesium ions at least equivalent to the precipitated calcium carbonate; the precipitate is separated, dried and calcined ; the calcined mixture is reacted with the mother liquor thereby precipitating magnesium hydroxide free from calcium compounds ; the precipitate is washed, dried and finally washed with fresh water. The final washing is effected in a ball mill or other grinding apparatus. The settling of the precipitate produced by the addition of lime is facilitated by the use of organic flocculating agents, i.e. alginates and humate products from seaweed, peat and lignite; shredded seaweed or a sodium hydrate or carbonate extract of seaweed are suitable materials. Specification 527,139 is referred to. |
