| abstract | 541,738. Vegetable colloids. CELEC CORPORATION, Ltd., PHILLIPS, S. M., and BAKER, A. July 15, 1940, No. 11734. [Class 121] Sisal boles are treated to obtain sugar, glucosides or fermentation products from the juice, a colloidal material, methyl alcohol and cellulose. The hard outer skin is removed from the boles by a knife or by turning in a lathe, the skinned boles are cut into pieces or macerated and juice extracted by pressure. The pressed pieces may be soaked in water to extract sugar, glucosides &c. and are boiled in an alkaline solution to extract a pectic gel. The vapours contain methyl alcohol which may be condensed. The colloidal solution may be dehydrated or treated to precipitate the gel. The residue from the extraction may be treated to obtain pure cellulose or may be saccharified.
