titleOfInvention Process for the manufacture of homologues of d1-tocopherols
abstract 541,008. Tocols. HOFFMAN-LA ROCHE & CO., AKT.-GES., F. Feb. 15, 1940, No. 2917. Convention date, March 8, 1939. Addition to 526,884. [Class 2 (iii)] Homologues of the dl-tocopherols described in the parent Specification are prepared by condensing di- or trialkyl nuclear substituted derivatives of hydroquinone, in which the alkyl groups consist partly of methyl groups and partly of ethyl groups or exclusively of ethyl groups, with phytol, isophytol or phytyl halides in the presence of acidic condensing agents. The products exert the activity of Vitamin E. Examples describe the condensation in the presence of zinc chloride of 2-ethyl- 3 : 5-dimethylhydroquinone and 3 : 5-diethylhydroquinone with phytyl bromide and of 2-ethyl-3 : 5-dimethyl hydroquinone with phytol to produce tocols whose formulae are given.
