titleOfInvention | Improvements relating to treatments for renovating or preventing shrinkage of films and other articles of cellulose derivatives and the like |
abstract | 540,296. Treating films &c. with softening agents. TECHNICOLOR MOTION PICTURE CORPORATION. April 9, 1940, No. 6413. Convention date. July 25, 1939. [Class 2 (ii)] [Also in Group XX] Articles e.g. photographic films made from cellulose derivatives or like plastic materials containing volatile plasticizing agents are treated with the vapour from a composition comprising a solvent mixture of volatile organic solvents, a volatile plasticizer, and water in approximately azeotropic proportions and an inert solidifying agent dispersed in the solvent mixture in sufficient amount to render the composition non-fluid. The treatment may be carried out so as to prevent shrinkage of the articles or to restore the properties of articles which have deteriorated through loss of their volatile constituents. The solidifying agent may be soap, glue, clay, asbestos fibre, or wood flour, in sufficient quantity to impart a stiff paste-like or similar semi-solid consistency. The articles to be treated are placed in an enclosed conditioning chamber containing the vapour emanating from the composition. The volatile plasticizer may be dimethyl phthalate, diethyl phthalate, dibutyl phthalate, dibutyl tartrate, triphenyl phosphate, tricresyl phosphate, or camphor. The organic solvent may be ethyl alcohol, n-propyl alcohol, iso-propyl alcohol, n-butyl alcohol, tert-butyl alcohol, amyl alcohol, amyl acetate, ethyl acetate, benzene, naphtha, carbon tetrachloride, or chloroform. In an example a stiff paste is made by mixing camphor, ethyl, propyl, and butyl alcohols, dimethyl phthalate, water, asbestos fibres, and soap flakes. For treating photographic films to prevent shrinkage or to restore shrunken films, the stiff paste is placed in a can having a perforated cover and the can is placed in a container for receiving the films. The atmosphere of the container soon becomes saturated with the vapour of solvent and plasticizer. The Specification as open to inspection under Sect. 91 comprises also the use of liquid compositions in which the inert solidifying agent is omitted. Such compositions may be sprayed or atomized into the conditioning chamber. Compositions containing no water may be used. This subject-matter does not appear in the Specification as accepted. |
