titleOfInvention Improvements in or relating to the preparation of d-tartaric acid
abstract 538,945. Tartaric acid. PFIZER & CO., C. Dec. 8, 1939, No. 31847. Convention date, Dec. 13, 1938. [Class 2 (iii)] d-Tartaric acid is produced by oxidizing 5-keto-d-gluconic acid or its salts by means of an oxidizing agent which may be selected from a soluble hypobromate selenium dioxide, mercuric and cupric oxides and mercuric and cupric oxides used alone or oxygencontaining gases or soluble chlorates alone or together with a catalyst consisting of an oxide of vanadium, cobalt, manganese, titanium, molybdenum, chromium, iron cerium, nickel, uranium or tungsten or a soluble salt of an acidic oxide of one of these metals. The reaction may be effected under acid or alkaline conditions, at pH 0.1 to 14, preferably below 80‹ C. Examples describe the oxidation by means of (1) potassium hypobromite (or anodic oxygen in the presence of a bromide and excess of alkali) ; (2) ammonium vanadate and potassium chlorate ; (3) finely-divided oxygen ; (4) and (5) finely-divided oxygen and vanadium pentoxide ; (6) manganese dioxide in the presence of nitric acid which is used to adjust the pH ; oxides of the other metals mentioned may be used instead of the manganese oxide.
